History of the Hotel

Steinhauswirt - a working inn

Over 500 years, certainly from 1524 onwards, the village centre of Steinhaus has been graced by the walls of the listed Steinhauswirt. It was built as a working inn and had always been the center of social life. It is still a sociable place that retains a lot of its traditional charm.

In those days Steinhaus was the administrative center of the Prettau copper mine. It seems probable that ater the barons of Welsberg closed their mining company in 1562 the inn was restructured. Accordingly, in 1564 today's municipal building was constructed.

At that time the copper mine was owned by the baron of Wolkenstein-Rodenegg. It is pobbible that there had been an inn in Steinhaus previously but ir was bought by the mining entrepreneurs and was then leased.
